Chestita Baba Marta!/Happy Baba Marta! Пролет идва! Spring is coming!

Today is Baba Marta (Grandmother March) in Bulgaria! On Baba Marta, everyone gives their friends and family martzenitzi (singular: martenitza), red and white bracelets and ornaments. People wear the bracelets every day until they see their first stork of spring. Then they remove the bracelets and tie them to a tree. A fruit tree is best, as the martenitzi will ensure a bountiful harvest for the tree.

Baba Marta is a pre-Christian festival - ethnographers believe it dates from Thracian times. There are similar traditions in Romania and Albania. (Hang on just a bit for more on those.)
