On 28 October 1918, Czechoslovakia became an independent nation. Until then, it had been part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which fell apart following the end of World War I.
The dapper-looking fellow in the center with the hat and the mustache is Tomáš Masaryk, the politician and philosopher who did the negotiating for the Czechoslovakian people in Washington and in Paris. He went on to become the first president of Czechoslovakia, an office he held until 1935.
